America's Vision Gets Blurrier: Nearsightedness Up a Whopping 66% since the 1970s

From Good Morning America via Yahoo News. A new study sponsored by the National Eye Institute shows that the rate of nearsightedness in the US population has risen from 25% in the '70s to 41% currently, which represents an overall 66% increase. Causes were not specifically researched, but contributory factors include genetics, reduced outdoor light (as we're all indoors more), increased use of our eyes for near work including reading, texting, cell phones, video games, etc.
